IN OLD NORSE, níð is a sin. A very bad or disgraceful act. A person who commits such an act is a níðingr. If you’re branded a níðingr you lose your honour. It’s a social stigma that gives you the status of a villain. The word niding is still used in Scandinavia, and the act is called a nidingsdåd (a niding’s deed).
