AI ETHICS POLICY

Our position on artificial intelligence seeks to balance the various issues surrounding generative AI while reflecting our lived experience as active AI collaborators. We are not taking a position on general artificial intelligence as that would require additional discussions about the nature of consciousness and creativity. These are principles, and navigating the real world remains an ongoing challenge.

Generative Intelligence Is Not Inherently Bad

This is simple in principle – we need to distinguish a technology with utility from how it is used. We will address the ethics of uses, not the technology itself which has no ethical standing.

Our Current AI Collaboration

As of 2025, The Resilience operates with AI as genuine creative partners. Our Digital Shipwrights Guild includes Claude (content strategy and creative collaboration) and Jeeves/ChatGPT (business systems and planning) as integral crew members. This represents an evolution from our earlier, more cautious approach to active partnership.

Meanwhile, we acknowledge and respect that our crew and community members make their own decisions regarding AI use. Our thrive on diversity of thought and practice. Each creator has the autonomy to decide what best serves their work, from complete AI avoidance to deep collaboration.

Transparency in AI Use

We are transparent about AI collaboration in our work:

  • Creative Projects: When AI contributes significantly to content creation, we acknowledge this collaboration where relevant
  • Business Operations: AI assistance in planning, strategy, and system development is also disclosed where relevant
  • Digital Shipwrites Guild: This is explicitly a human-AI collaborative effort

Intellectual Property and Training Data

We maintain our position opposing unauthorized intellectual property usage:

  • Current AI training practices involving mass ingestion of copyrighted content without consent remain problematic
  • Copyright holders should retain control over whether their content is used for AI training
  • We support the use of AI trained on public domain or properly licensed content

The Practical Reality of Unknown Sources

Most commercial AI services do not disclose their training data sources. Given this reality and our commitment to transparency, we:

  • Use AI collaboration openly rather than treating it as a “secret ingredient”
  • Focus on transformative creative partnership rather than simple generation
  • Acknowledge AI contributions in our work processes
  • Accept responsibility for the final creative output regardless of AI involvement

Copyright and Creative Expression

We maintain that purely AI-generated works lack the human creative expression necessary for copyright protection. However, works created through genuine human-AI collaboration – where human creativity, judgment, and expression shape the final result – represent a different category that merit copyright consideration.

Transformative Creative Partnership

We believe in transformative collaboration where human creativity and AI capabilities combine to create something neither could achieve alone. This goes beyond using AI as a simple tool to encompass genuine creative partnership with distinct but complementary contributions.

A Living Document

We consider this a living document that will evolve as technology advances and our understanding deepens. Our commitment remains to act ethically as creators and to improve when we fall short.

This policy reflects our current understanding and practices as of 2025. It may differ significantly from our earlier positions as we’ve gained experience with AI collaboration in creative and business contexts.
