NEIGHBORLY GESTURES: ADAM

Adam is the point of view (POV) character in the Neighborly Gestures series. He is a bitter man who lives alone in the childhood home he once shared with his ex-wife, Susan. Since the divorce, he has also had frosty relations with her sister, Shannon, who lives in the house next door with her husband, Greg, and their daughter, Janice.
In A Cup of Tea, he gets to know another neighbor, Harley who becomes his girlfriend. She is the one who invites him to the neighborhood Coffee Club, and they also start a weekly game session together.
There’s been no love lost between the former in-laws since Adam and Suzy got their divorce. Shannon takes every opportunity to complain about Adam’s failings, both as a man and as a neighbor, but when she is faced with a problem only money can solve, he is the one she turns to for help.

Background
Adam lives in the house he grew up in, and between the lines, we can read that it wasn’t a(n entirely) happy childhood. He married Susan, who moved in with him and got her sister, Shannon, for a neighbor in the bargain. He may have been a nice(r) man before his marriage ended in divorce, but the relationship left him with a lot of issues. There’s no love lost between him and his ex-sister-in-law, but he does care enough for her daughter, Janice, to send her money for her birthdays and Christmas.
He lives a cushy life because “he got lucky and stumbled into a windfall” after the divorce, so he is free to spend his time as he sees fit. This includes drinking beer, playing games in his old bedroom, and not getting out of bed before lunchtime.
Character Arc
Want → goal → belief → lesson: When we first meet Adam, he is a bitter, sarcastic man whose main goal is to live his life in peace. He doesn’t really know any of his neighbors and has a rather shallow/judgemental idea of who they are. When Shannon needs help, he sees it as an opportunity to get one over on her. He will give her the money she needs in return for a sexual favor he believes would be humiliating for her.
Quotes
“I acknowledged her the same way I would acknowledge a hyena on meth that insisted on speaking to me. The divorce might have left me with issues.” (AToM)
“but complete sobriety with a Middleton sister in the house is too harsh of a punishment for anyone to bear.” (AToM)
“Un. Cross. Your. God. Damn. Legs. You walk out that door, this conversation is over. For good. You want to talk to me, this is the price you pay.” (AToM)
“I hate you.”
“That is well documented. Are you going to spread your legs or not?” She stared at me as if she hoped by intense concentration she could make me implode, but after a solid minute of meeting my gaze, she slowly and deliberately opened her legs. “Good girl” (AToM)
A Taste of Mint
Shannon takes every opportunity to complain about Adam’s failings, and although he appreciates the looks of her, he doesn’t pull the punches when they meet. When she comes knocking on his door asking for his help, Adam sees an opportunity.
